To set the initial state, use this.state in the constructor with your ES6 class React.Component syntax. Don’t forget to invoke super () with properties, otherwise the logic in parent React may batch multiple setState () calls into a single update for performance. Because this.props and this.state maybe updated asynchronously, you should not rely on their values for calculating In a React component, props are variables passed to it by its parent component.

With the advent of Hooks, the preferred way to share logic between components is via reusable custom Hooks. To create truly reusable custom Hooks, you should adopt the tried-and-tested advanced React component patterns. One of these patterns is called the state initializer pattern. What is the state initializer pattern? When building a component using React there is often a requirement to create a side effect when one of the component props changes.

Props cannot be directly updated. To pass a prop value to a component, we cannot within that function component attempt to immediately change that prop's value. Prop values must be pure values. In other words, they cannot be mutated or changed directly. Props are immutable to the component receiving them. You don't change props passed to a component from within the component: State is changeable, React uses the setState() method to update the object of a state. State can only be mutated by the component that contains the state.
